The Suicide Rule
The 1998 movie, Dead Man on Campus, was inspired by this
legend. As any college dorm resident can tell you, the
easiest way to get a 4.0 for the semester is to have
your roommate die. Murder, suicide, accidental death or
a fatal illness all qualify, but the requirements vary
from school to school.
Some schools insist that you must be present at the time
of death. Surviving roommates who have not personally
witnessed the death only get a 3.5 for the semester.
In other schools, the death must occur in the dorm room.
In this case, the survivors can choose between a 4.0 for
the semester, or first pick in the next dorm room
Some schools have rather stringent requirements. For
example, the death must occur in the last six weeks of
Students who murder their roommates do not qualify for
the automatic 4.0.
Variations: Students in some schools believe that the
death of a parent or a sibling also qualifies for a 4.0.
A related legend tells of a final exam in which a
student killed himself. To console the other students in
the room, the school gave them all an Afar that exam.
