The Last Kiss
This is one of the rare urban legends that originated in
New Zealand. A newly married man named Nelson had a job
at a quarry as part of a team that worked the rock
crusher. One day, a couple of weeks after his wedding,
he slipped as he was stepping over the conveyor belt and
was dragged into the machine. His friends managed to
turn the machine off, but it didn't look good for
The medic assessed the situation, gave Nelson some
painkillers and then took the foreman aside.
"Here's what we've got. He's been chewed up from the
waist down. Even if we get him to the hospital alive,
he'll be dead in a couple of hours. But if we turn the
machine back on, it will all be over in a couple of
seconds. What do you want to do?"
"I can't make that kind of decision," the foreman said.
"I'll have to ask Nelson."
Nelson chose the quick way out. "But get my wife down
here first. I want one last kiss before I go."
The foreman himself brought Nelson's wife to the quarry.
The team went behind the stone crusher so the couple
could have a few final minutes of privacy. At last, they
saw Nelson's wife run from the quarry, sobbing.
"We're clear," the foreman said. Then, with his voice
choked with emotion, he gave the order, "Start her up!"
Variation: The American version of this story is
identical in all the details except one: In the U.S.
telling, the man is trapped beneath a steamroller.
