Truman Capote is said to have told this story when he
was a guest on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show.
A young man went to pick up his new girlfriend at her
place on the twenty-third floor of an apartment tower on
Manhattan's Upper East Side.
"I'm not ready to go yet," she said as she escorted him
into the living room. "Have a seat. I only need a couple
more minutes. You can get acquainted with my dog. He
likes to play fetch."
Beside the couch was a pink rubber ball. The young man
bounced it a few times off the floor, while the dog, a
friendly little terrier, jumped up and down and yapped
"Okay pooch, we'll start with something easy."
The young man tossed the ball against a bookcase. The
dog caught it on the rebound in midair.
"Good boy! Try this one."
The young man threw ball against the far wall of the
living room. Again the terrier snatched the ball out of
the air and brought it back to the boyfriend.
"Okay, dog, show me what you've got." Now the young men
threw the ball hard so that it bounced at the threshold
of the French doors that opened on to the balcony.
The terrier dashed across the room after the ball, made
a beautiful leap into the air, snatched the ball, and
with it still in its teeth, sailed over the balcony
railing . . . to certain death.
