Snowflakes Discovered in Antarctica
The discovery of two identical snowflakes has caused a
flurry of excitement in the meteorological community.
Scientists stationed at the Vostok station in Antarctica
announced the detection of the doppelgangers last week.
Dr. Sacha Zubkin, a glaciologist with the Russian
research team, is credited with making the fateful
match.
“We get very bored” Dr. Zubkin shared “Vostok is too far
inland for ice fishing and one can only build so many
snowmen before that activity loses its charm. So, we
collect snowflakes.”
This breakthrough marks the culmination of almost a
decade of collaborative research worldwide - or at least
in countries that experience regular snowfall. Each
captured flake is digitally photographed and uploaded to
a massive database. Software similar to that used to
match fingerprints is employed to analyze these ice
crystals.
Until now, it was assumed that no two snowflakes were
exactly alike. It is believed that the magnetic activity
at Vostok (which is located exactly atop the magnetic
South Pole) may have caused the formation of these rare
twin flakes.
Some have questioned the propriety of scientific
resources being spent on what seemed a frivolous
pursuit. However, the head of the Vostok team has
chilling news for scoffers “With global warming
occurring so rapidly, this may be the last generation to
see real snowflakes. We are making this record for
posterity - for your great grandchildren.”
Artificial snow machine manufacturers expect to see an
uptick in business as natural snowfall becomes
increasingly rare.
