Fashion Craze Floods England
The latest teen clothing statement has taken the fashion
world by surprise. Today’s youth are turning to chest
waders as a combined pant and footwear option for winter
of ’09. This garment of choice for freshwater fishing
enthusiasts is catching on as favorite wet weather gear
for kids in the British Isles.
Todd Reynolds, a Manchester teenager, explains the
reason for the popularity of this odd piece of apparel.
“Rubber dungarees are where it’s at, right? Nothin’ you
can’t do in ‘em - paintball, rugby, you name it.”
Surprisingly, parents are on board with this new trend.
As one mother commented “At least my daughters are
covering themselves up this year. Usually I have to
fight to keep them from dressing like tarts - this is a
relief.”

This unusual garb made a surprise appearance at one Prêt
a Porter show in Paris last month. A fashion model
walked the runway in rhinestone studded chest waders -
with 5 inch rubber heels. Big names like Isaac Mizrahi
and Ralph Lauren are picking up on this trend and
offering options beyond the traditional grey and
camouflage colors. Everyday fashionistas can now find
these nylon jersey and rubber coveralls in fuchsia,
tangerine, and retro flowered prints at Debenhams and
several other department stores.
Designer Marco Conti says he isn’t surprised by this
turn of events “People wear Crocs in public for heaven’s
sake - it’s a brave new world.”
