São Paulo police responded to a complaint on Friday in a
sleepy Higienópolis neighborhood. Several residents
placed calls to report what appeared to be a freshly dug
grave in the front yard of a recently restored mansion.
The large mound of fresh dirt was marked with a crude
wooden headstone.
The couple living in the home was originally charged
with improper disposal of a corpse. However, Mr. & Mrs.
Cabral claim that the burial site is a fake. “It’s for
Halloween” remarked Sophia Cabral “I know it’s not a big
a deal here in Brazil, but our niece is visiting from
Arizona - she wanted to do this.”
Officers spent several hours excavating the Cabral’s
front and back yards before conceding that there was,
indeed, no body to be found. São Paulo’s police chief
told the press that the couple will be fined to cover
the cost of this investigation.
“Brazil does not formally recognize Halloween as a
holiday” he declared. “How were we to know it was an
elaborate hoax? We had to use cadaver dogs, methane
detection equipment, the whole nine yards on this case.
With recent budget cuts, we simply can’t afford for
citizens to waste valuable resources.”
As a result of this fiasco, residents in several South
American countries have been cautioned to think twice
before erecting questionable lawn displays this season.
The spooky graveyard in Mr Cabral's garden - all ready
for Halloween.
