Wild Pandas
Overrun Chinese City
Residents are experiencing a severe infestation of wild
pandas in urban areas throughout Shaanxi province. This
endangered species (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is thought
to have a population of only 220 animals in the Qinling
Mountains with about 800 more scattered across the
nation. Until now, these retiring creatures have gone
out of their way to avoid contact with humans. These
days, they are taking to the streets.
Things changed drastically when the average panda
suddenly stopped being such a picky eater. No more
bamboo for these gentle giants. They are ransacking
garbage cans in the early hours of the morning looking
for scraps. Scientists view this as a quantum leap in
evolution. “With their natural habitat being destroyed,
they had to change or die.”

Biologists point out that the panda’s digestive system
has never been designed for a high cellulose plant diet
anyway. They were already known to consume carrion in
the wild; so moving on to dumpster diving is a logical
step. Now that they have overcome their severe social
anxiety disorder, their breeding frequency is expected
to improve as well. As local news anchor Deming Chu put
it “We may finally see ‘pandas gone wild’ this year”.
City folk aren’t pleased with this invasion of what they
are calling 巨型鼠 or “giant rats”. Chinese citizens are
advised to call animal control if they see a panda bear
roaming the streets. These beasts will be captured and
released in the mountains.
